Tech 🖥️: OpenAI’s much-anticipated GPT-4 has finally arrived. The new AI creation is a large multimodal model that can accept text and image inputs while returning text outputs that “exhibits human-level performance on various professional and academic benchmarks”. In other words, ChatGPT just got a whole lot more powerful. Besides being a super cool invention, GPT-4 can also be used to save founders hours each week by helping out with everything from coding to legal documentation. Social Media 🧑‍⚖️: TikTok has been handed an ultimatum: divest from China or be banned in the US. Although CEO Shou Chew is testifying before Congress in an attempt to convince them of TikTok’s innocence, things do not look great for the world’s most popular and addicting app. However, even if TikTok is kicked out of the US, it has forever changed the social media landscape. Short-form videos that are algorithmically recommended are now used by all major social media platforms, and this trend does not appear to be slowing down anytime soon. The only question remaining is: how do you best monetize this model?

Management 🏢: Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently made a strange move: announcing a round of 10,000 layoffs very far in advance. This is not typically recommended, as employee performance usually tanks following job cuts. To announce cuts months beforehand is to risk this productivity drain occurring prematurely. However, you could also argue that announcing cuts early promotes a culture of honest and open communication. Ultimately, this appears to be a calculated play to satisfy Meta’s shareholders and is not something that we recommend small startups emulate.
